Heres a very pretty angel from the cemetery in Hattiesburg. If you click on the photo it should go to a larger version. Theres an even larger version available, and the only reason I mention that is the wonderful detail in the sculpture. She's just beautiful.
She is in a locked and gated mausoleum or she wouldn't be in such great shape. Time, weather and vandals are hard on statuary, and this one has some fragile details.
I love funerary art from days gone by - so much care went into the statues and memorials. People don't seem to do that much anymore, though I have seen some interesting modern memorials in a cemetery in Coleman, Tx.
John Deere Tractors and all. While that may be more representative of the actual lives lived by the departed, I still prefer the romantasized artwork from the 1800's and early 1900's. The old cemetery in Natchez has many fine works.
